The Doorway Within the Obstacle

Morning sunlight and wind moving through pages symbolize spiritual awareness, freedom, discernment, and the doorway within the obstacle.

The Spirit Moving Within the Obstacle

On Pentecost morning, I sat quietly on my porch swing with a cup of coffee, listening to the sounds of the farm slowly waking around me. The wind was moving gently through the trees lining our creek, but in one particular spot, it almost seemed as though the Spirit was playing with the branches, stirring them differently than the rest. As I watched, something within me became still enough to notice another movement happening beneath the surface of my own heart.

Over these past weeks, we have reflected on obstacles, protective patterns, shame, hiding, and the repeating walls we encounter within ourselves. We have explored the ways fear, woundedness, distraction, and old patterns can keep us from freedom, love, and a deeper relationship with God. But that morning, something else became clear - not every obstacle begins in darkness.

Some patterns are formed around things that once felt beautiful, comforting, safe, or deeply affirming.

And sometimes those patterns quietly begin shaping us more than we realize.

The Doorway Within the Obstacle of Affirmation

As I sat there praying, I became aware of how deeply affirmation has shaped parts of my own inner world. There is within me a hunger for affirmation that, at times, can quietly pull me away from freedom and peace. When it is not received, discouragement or insecurity can quickly rise within me. As I reflected more deeply, watching the wind dance in the treetops, I realized this pattern was not born only from pain - part of it grew from something genuinely beautiful.

As a child, there were moments of affirmation and affection that felt deeply safe and nourishing to my heart. Those experiences mattered; they were real gifts. But over time, I began to depend on that external affirmation to tell me who I was, whether I was enough, whether I was loved, whether I belonged. What once brought comfort slowly became something I unconsciously sought for identity.

This is extremely important because not every obstacle is rooted in something obviously harmful.

Sometimes the doorway into awareness opens by recognizing the ways we have attached ourselves to things that once felt life-giving but gradually became things we depended on to steady us, define us, or reassure us.

What the Obstacle Within Us May Be Revealing

The obstacle becomes a doorway the moment we stop asking only how to escape it and begin asking what it is revealing about where we seek safety, identity, worth, or love. This changes the spiritual life completely.

Instead of approaching ourselves with accusation or shame, we begin approaching our inner world with curiosity, honesty, compassion, and discernment. We begin asking:

What am I leaning upon to tell me who I am?

What do I fear losing?

What do I reach for when I no longer feel steady within myself?

Sometimes the answers reveal places of pain; other times, they reveal places of comfort. Often, they reveal both at once.

The Doorway Within the Obstacle and Freedom

Freedom is not found in having no attachments. It is found in recognizing what we depend on to tell us who we are - this is where discernment becomes deeply important.

There are many beautiful gifts in life: affirmation, love, success, relationships, ministry, knowledge, comfort, accomplishment, and belonging. None of these things is inherently wrong. Many are holy gifts, but whenever something outside of God becomes the primary place from which we draw our worth, security, or identity, fear quietly enters alongside it. We begin protecting it, striving for it, fearing its absence, or collapsing when it is withheld.

Eventually, what once nourished us can begin limiting our freedom. Not because it was bad, but because we began asking it to carry more than it was ever meant to hold.

The Spirit Within the Doorway

The beautiful thing is that awareness itself is already grace. The moment we begin to notice these patterns without hiding from them, something opens within us. The Spirit moves gently through those interior places the same way the wind moved through the trees that Pentecost morning: not with violence, but with presence, movement, and invitation.

God does not shame us for our attachments; God invites us deeper into them.

Again and again, the spiritual life becomes less about self-perfection and more about becoming conscious enough to notice what is moving within us and honest enough to bring it into relationship with God. The obstacle itself becomes the doorway.

Returning to the Questions Within the Obstacle

In April, we asked, What is happening within me?

This month, we have asked, Why do I keep returning to the same wall?

Now perhaps another question emerges: What is this obstacle revealing about where I seek safety, identity, affirmation, worth, or love?

If we allow God to breathe into the answer, it can release the bound places within and fill us with the space to create a new dialogue.

Embodied Prayer Practice for the Doorway Within the Obstacle

Sit quietly and notice one pattern, attachment, or longing that has been especially present in your life lately. Without judging it, notice what it gives you:

Safety?

Comfort?

Affirmation?

Control?

Belonging?

Now place one hand over your heart and take one slow inhale and one slow exhale.

As you breathe, pray gently: God, help me notice what I depend upon to tell me who I am. Lead me deeper into the freedom of Your love. Help me trust what is already true within me.

Remain there for fifteen conscious seconds, allowing awareness and grace to meet.

Journaling Prompt About the Doorway Within the Obstacle

After spending time in breath, awareness, and prayerful noticing, allow what is stirring within you to find a voice upon the page gently. Journaling is not about writing the “right” thing; it is about creating space for what has been hidden, guarded, or unnamed to be seen in the light of God’s presence, which always meets it as Jesus did with only affection and compassion. Often, what we honestly name before God begins to lose its power to shape us quietly from beneath the surface.

  • What attachment, pattern, or longing most shapes my sense of identity or worth?

  • What might God be inviting me to notice, loosen, trust, or surrender more deeply?

  • What would freedom within this place feel like?

From the garden within me to the garden within you, where God awaits,

Kimi
