The Magnificat: When Peace Rises Through Praise

Journeying with Mary through Advent
Journeying with Mary through Advent

Peace That Does Not Rush the Ending

Peace rarely arrives the way we expect. We often imagine peace as resolution…as answers…as finally knowing how things will turn out, but Mary teaches us something far more honest. Her peace does not come when the road is clear. It comes while she is still waiting…while her body is changing…while the future remains unknown.

Mary’s peace is not rooted in certainty. It is rooted in trust, and trust, when it ripens, becomes praise. This is where we meet Mary in the Magnificat.

A Song Born from Surrender

Standing in Elizabeth’s home, Mary sings. Not because everything is settled or because the story is finished, but because she knows who God is.

“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.”

Her song gathers everything she has carried so far: the fear, the courage, the waiting, the mystery. And she releases it into praise. This is the secret of Mary’s peace: she allows gratitude to rise before the promise is complete.

Peace, then, is not passive. It is an act of deep surrender. It is the moment we loosen our grip and say, “God, I trust You more than I trust my need to control.”

Before You Write: A Grounding Breath

Before we move any further, let’s settle the body. Peace does not come by effort. It comes by permission. If you are able, place both feet on the ground. Let your hands rest gently on your thighs or over your heart.

Take a slow breath in through your nose, and a soft breath out through your mouth.

Again…inhale, receiving the steadiness of God’s presence…

exhale, releasing what you do not need to carry right now.

One more time…allow your breath to create space within you.

When you feel ready, continue.

Writing Your Own Magnificat

Mary’s Magnificat did not end with her. It continues in us. Each time we name where God has met us; each time we praise before outcomes are clear; each time we trust God’s unfolding more than our fear, the song goes on.

I invite you now to write your own Magnificat.

This is not about beautiful words. It is about honest prayer. You may write in complete sentences, fragments, or simple phrases. Let this be prayer, not performance. If it helps, you can use the italicized prompts to guide you within the lines of your story.

My Magnificat

My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for the Holy One has looked with kindness upon my life of (name your ordinary life…)

and has seen me in my (enter a place of longing, struggle, or hope)

Great is the mercy that has carried me through (a difficult season or loss)

and holy is the love that is teaching me (a grace or lesson unfolding now)

The Mighty One has done great things for me when (a moment of unexpected beauty or strength)

and I will remember this grace when I face (a challenge or uncertainty you are holding).

God has lifted my heart from (fear, doubt, weariness...) into (peace, trust, quiet hope...),

and has filled my life with (people, gifts, moments of grace).

My soul will keep on singing (a word, image, or phrase of praise).

My spirit will keep on trusting (a promise you are learning to rest in).

For God’s promises are alive in me, now and forever.

Amen.

An Embodied Prayer of Peace

When you have finished writing, place your hands gently over your words.

Take a slow breath in, gathering gratitude into your heart, and a slow breath out, releasing control into God’s care.

If you wish, whisper softly: “My soul magnifies the Lord.”

Let your Magnificat rest within you, not as something completed, but as something still unfolding.

A Closing Blessing for Peace

Peace does not come from knowing how the story ends; rather, peace comes from trusting the One who is writing it with you.

May your praise steady your heart this Advent. May your gratitude soften what fear has tightened. May your Magnificat become a place of rest, and as Mary teaches us so gently, when we release control, peace rises quietly, faithfully, and from within.

What peace is waiting to be born in you as you surrender to God’s unfolding?

Carry that question with you into the days ahead.

From my Garden to yours,

Kimi
