Your Psalm: Discovering the Song God Has Been Writing Within You

“He has put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God." -Psalm 40:3
When we began this journey together, you may have thought we were simply reading the Psalms. Then, perhaps, you discovered something unexpected - the Psalms began reading you.
Week after week, they invited you to recognize your own heart, speak honestly, trust God’s faithful companionship, and walk through the doorway of His unwavering love. Along the way, I invited you to pause, breathe, and journal - to write a sentence here and another there.
You may have thought you were simply answering reflection questions. I wonder now if something much quieter has been happening. Perhaps, one honest sentence at a time, you have already begun writing your own psalm.
Your Life Has Always Been a Prayer
The psalmists did not write because they had life figured out; they wrote because they were living. Their songs were born from ordinary days and extraordinary moments. From waiting, rejoicing, grieving, questioning, trusting, failing, hoping, wandering, and returning. In other words... they wrote from the very place where they found themselves. So do we.
Your life is already filled with the language of prayer: the moments that took your breath away, the questions you never found answers to, the people who shaped you, the wounds that still ache, the unexpected joys that arrived like morning light, the places where God felt impossibly near, and the seasons when He seemed painfully silent. None of these stand outside your prayer; they are your prayer.
The Holy Spirit Weaves the Song
Over the years, I have invited many people to write their own psalm. Some begin reluctantly; others quietly confess they don’t know what to say. Almost all wonder if they are doing it “correctly.” Then something beautiful happens.
As I begin reading their words, tears often fill my eyes. Not because they have written beautiful poetry, but because I can see what the Holy Spirit has been doing. Thread by thread... memory by memory... longing by longing... He has been weaving every struggle, every grace, every question, and every hope into a conversation with God.
Their psalm is not the story of a perfect life. It is the witness of a faithful God. Yours will be as well.
The Holy Spirit does not wait until your life is finished to begin your song. He has been weaving it all along.
Writing Your Psalm
Take out the pages you’ve written throughout this month. Read them slowly. Notice the words that appear more than once, the emotions that return. Notice the names, places, Scriptures, or images that seem to gather your attention. Don’t organize or edit them. Listen to them.
Now begin writing - not as a poet or a theologian. Simply as yourself. Write to God:
Tell Him what you have seen.
Tell Him what you are still wondering.
Tell Him where you have discovered His faithfulness.
Tell Him where you are still waiting.
Allow your words to become conversation rather than composition. The Psalms remind us that prayer is not measured by polish; it is measured by honesty.
The Song Continues
When you finish writing, read your psalm aloud, slowly. Notice where your voice becomes strong and where it trembles, as both belong.
Then place your psalm somewhere safe.
Return to it in a month. Read it again.
You may discover that God has already begun answering prayers you didn’t even realize you were praying because that is often how the Psalms work. They help us recognize, in hindsight, the faithfulness that was quietly accompanying us all along.
You did not begin this month by learning how to write a psalm. You began by learning to trust that God delights in hearing your voice.
That has been the invitation hidden within the Psalms from the very beginning. Not simply to read someone else’s song, but to discover that your own life has become part of the same sacred conversation.
Breathe
Place one hand over your heart.
Rest the other open in your lap.
Take a slow breath in.
As you exhale, whisper: “Here I am.”
Take another gentle breath.
Whisper: “You have been here all along.”\
Remain in silence for several moments before you begin to write.
Journal
Today, there are no questions. Only an invitation - write your psalm.
Trust your voice.
Trust the Holy Spirit.
Trust the God who has delighted in listening long before you found the courage to speak. Your song has already begun.
From the garden within me to the garden within you, where God awaits,
Kimi
