Saying Yes to the God Who Burns but Does Not Consume

Pathway: Fire & Light

Category: Reflections

Scripture: Luke 1:34–38

“Then Mary said to the angel, ‘How can this be, since I do not know a man?’ … Then the angel said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you…’” -Luke 1:34–35

There is always a moment, before surrender, where fear breathes loudest.

For Mary, it came in the form of a question:

“How can this be?” She wasn’t doubting God’s power; she was asking what we all ask when the invitation feels impossible:

What will it cost me? Who will I become?

Mary’s question wasn’t a resistance. It was reverence. She dared to name the gap between what she understood and what God was asking. And God, so tender, did not shame her. He answered her fear with Spirit.

“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you…”

This is always how fire begins:

with the overshadowing.

The Transformation Begins in the Body

Mary doesn’t make up her mind alone. She makes it with her body.

To say “yes” to God’s plan meant she would carry uncertainty in her womb, risk shame in her community, and release control of the path she once imagined.

And still she burned with holy fire and said yes.

Her “Let it be” is a fiat of fierce trust, a prayer not of understanding, but of embodied surrender.

She becomes the first tabernacle of Christ not just because she was chosen, but because she consented freely, fully, fearfully.

The Fire & Light Pathway Within You

Like Mary, you are not called to understand everything before you say yes. You are called to trust the flame, the holy energy of the Spirit that clarifies, transforms, and strengthens you for what lies ahead.

Fire does not ask you to be fearless. It asks you to step in anyway; to bring your whole, trembling body to the altar and whisper: “Let it be done unto me…”

Embodied Reflection

  • Sit tall. Feel your feet on the ground.

  • Inhale: “Let it be…”

  • Exhale: “...unto me according to Your Word.”

  • Place your hands gently on your belly. Feel what it means to carry something holy.

  • Ask God to show you where the Fire is already at work within you.

Reflective Questions

  • What is God inviting me to say yes to right now?

  • Where am I holding fear or hesitation in my body?

  • Can I trust that the Spirit will “come upon me” as I move forward?
